Grief Companion Program

“I lift my eyes to the mounts. Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord."
                                                                    Psalm 121:1

The goals of the Grief Companion Program at St. John’s Lutheran Church are to help one another to grieve, to be with one another in sorrow and to love one another as Christ loves us.

We strive to express the sympathy and concern of St. John’s congregation and provide a ministry of support, empathetic listening, and educational resources to newly bereaved members in a confidential manner.

The program is based on a one-to-one mutually agreed upon relationship between the bereaved and a “Grief Companion.” The Grief Companion is a trained person who has suffered a similar loss. The Grief Companion provides relevant reading material provided by St. John’s and information about local support groups. Contacts with the bereaved are via letters on a regular basis. If so desired, the bereaved may ask for more personal support.

The program is evaluated and updated on a regular basis. To request a Grief Companion, for questions, or to volunteer please call the church office at 952-469-4916.
